Science of Dr Who, Edinburgh

March 10, 2023

The most striking thing about the Dr Who universe is that it is teeming with aliens but the most striking thing about our universe is that we see no sign of aliens. The most striking thing about the Dr Who universe is that time travel is possible and the most striking thing about our universe is that time travels cannot be ruled out! The National Museums of Scotland is one of my fave museums, so it was great to be able to give two talks on the science related to Dr Who. I talked about the prospects of finding aliens and the feasibility of time travel to an audience that had just seen the Dr Who exhibition…

Thanks to Siân Hickson for being such a great chair of my talk on the science of Dr Who and for asking such great questions about time, black holes, wormholes, and so on.

My new book is dedicated to my friend, Eric, worked for the London Electricity board and, during the power cuts of the 1970s, was the one who turned off the electricity to London. His partner, Richard, was a big fan of “Dr Who”, and Eric always turned Fulham’s power off AFTER “Dr Who!

Cards on the table. My qualification for giving a talk on the science of Dr Who is that I once went to a fancy dress party dressed as the Tardis – and won (mind you, I was only 8!)

Original controls of the Tardis – with dymo-tape labels!

It’s important to have a margarita before giving a talk on the science of Dr Who! (At the very cosy Under the Stairs)
