New Scientist Mysteries of the Universe
September 3, 2024
Spent 24 hours this weekend living it up in the Cheshire countryside! I was there for the New Scientist “Mysteries of the Universe” weekend. I gave a talk to an audience of about 80 about my book, A Crack In Everything: How black holes came in from the cold and took cosmic centre stage. The venue was the De Vere Cranagh Estate Hotel, a former asylum, in Cheshire. Everyone I spoke to seemed to really enjoy the weekend, hosted by Dr Stuart Clark, which included a visit to the radio observatory at Jodrell Bank. I left with a warm, fuzzy feeling, which survived even the train cancellations on the journey back to London!

Here I am showing a picture of Einstein with an electric guitar – during his rock ‘n’ roll years!

Nothing beats a swim to relax you before public speaking. Luxury!

Stuart Clark introduced me by saying that my book, “Afterglow of Creation”, had inspired him to be a science writer. It works both ways. At a low-point in my career, Stuart invited me to give a talk at the University of Hertfordshire on The Magic Furnace, and it really gave me a boost!
